Doth that man love his Lord who would be willing to see Jesus wearing a crown of thorns, while for himself he craves a chaplet of laurel? Shall Jesus ascend to His throne by the cross, and do we expect to be carried there on the shoulders of applauding crowds? Be not so vain in your imagination. Count you the cost, and if you are not willing to bear Christ’s cross, go away to your farm and to your merchandise, and make the most of them; only let me whisper this in your ear, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?”
-Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Strong words. But as true today as when uttered over 100 years ago. As Christians we should know that the narrow way was never going to be easy. The Church will always be attacked, and our beliefs will constantly be challenged. We will be ridiculed. They will try to shame us to conform to today’s ever changing standard of what is acceptable. To blatantly tolerate evil.
Look around you. It is everywhere. Western Civilization has already ceded so much ground being tolerant to the world. Can anyone honestly say we are better off for it? Of course not. But let us not be demoralized; it is so easy to do so when we are constantly bombarded by negative news. We have the Lord on our side. Stand firm to your convictions. Do not cede ground to the world. Stand up for what you believe in. It may be hard now, but it is eternally worth it.
